word families

I love doing a simple activity that only requires a few materials already in the house :)  I always did this with my students around Easter and they loved it.  All you do is choose a word family... -at, -ed, -ock, and the list goes on...write the ending sound, of your choice on the right side of the egg... then on the left side of the egg, write the beginning sound.  As you turn the egg, you have your word family, and rhyming words, of course! :)
I chose the beginning sounds and word family that Stella already knew how to sound out, to set her up for success.   I helped her blend the sounds together, to make a word. She was really excited with this, but when she was done...we put it away :)
make it easy:  make up a song using the words...rhyming is always fun and it's like playing a game :)
make it hard: write the words as you read, make a sentence with the words, draw a picture representing your sentence.
Happy Egg Learning :)
