the last of pumpkins...

Well, October is almost over and that means time to wrap up with pumpkins... :) Here are some other things we did throughout the month.

Sequencing the growth of a pumpkin...using words like, "first, second, etc." Made a pumpkin counting book. She cut the stems :) We also worked on number recognition while doing this too...
Pumpkin Stenciling...later she drew on the stems

This is not pumpkin related, but something on saw on pinterest. Just add paint to a ziploc baggie and hang in the window... really neat!

Make it easy: finger paint with orange paint, cut a sponge the shape of a pumpkin and paint away, then add the stem and leaves.

Make it hard: draw the different stages of a pumpkin...write about it.

pumpkins again :)

This month we've been reviewing the sounds for A, P and H. Stella found these craft sticks in my "stuff" and while I was getting supper ready last night, she said, "Look, I made an H!" YAY!! Just had to share! :) On to more pumpkin fun- Matching letter...Stella felt like she needed to put a matching letter to each one...I didn't have enough letters for that so....

I flipped it over and just put one word for her to match the letters to...this helped :)

A little art is always fun. I originally told her to paint one of her pumpkins, but she kept painting until all the small pumpkins were colorful :) I think she painted for at least 45 minutes.

Make it hard: While matching letters, discuss which ones are vowels. Talk about the short and long sound each of them make.

If you are painting pumpkins...create a pumpkin person by stacking them up and attaching sticks for the arms and various art supplies for the eyes and mouth! :)

more with October

I told you I liked the pumpkin part of the year :) Here are more fun activities going on at our house :)

"Pumpkin Personalities" Stella really liked these...I think she made 5 in all. My favorite is the big one...the red pieces are his cheeks! Felt is always fun. I thought she was going to make a sad face, but she told me it was his moustache :)
More on the pacing guide this month was the letter H, for Halloween.

Make it easy: Have fun with felt! Such a cheap and fast acticvty!

Make it hard: Make a list of words that begin with the /h/ sound.

Welcome Fall!

This month, I had on the pacing guide to start out with "my five senses", but after planning a pumpkin trip for the first of the month, and hopefully one later toward the end, I decided to go with Pumpkin's to kick off October. I think we'll do as much as she can last with pumpkins...personally, it's one of my favorites. :)

I saw this activity the other day and couldn't wait to try it. Luckily, we had some special tape...not sure if it's called painters tape..but it worked perfectly!

While we were dot painting, Stella painted over a few dots and said, "Look, it made brown!" (that made my heart smile). So, of course, we talked about how two different colors produce another...magical :)For the final product, we peeled the tape back and TA-DA! After this one, she wanted to make a suqare and triangle.
